How this is made
Tract colors are U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020 to 2024, from Esri's Living Atlas layers; every metric is the same release. Dollar figures are in the last survey year's dollars. A tract with no estimate is left unshaded.
The five color classes are cut at the 10th, 30th, 50th, 70th and 90th percentiles of the tracts in view, so a color's range changes as you pan. "Fixed" uses the same cut-offs in every view, set near the 10th, 30th, 50th, 70th and 90th percentiles of all U.S. tracts (for transit share, none and then the 60th to 90th percentiles, since half of tracts have no transit commuters), so colors compare between places.
Bike lanes and rail come from OpenStreetMap: an extract of Sep 22, 2026 for California, the Northeast corridor, Chicago and the Pacific Northwest, and live queries elsewhere. Rail is subway, light rail and tram, not commuter rail. Tract layers cover the U.S. only.
